First Impressions

By Maggie McCormick, Phase I Fellow

We just finished our second week at AMI, are adjusting to our new surroundings, and are beginning to settle into a routine.

During the past couple of weeks, I have spent some time reflecting on new experiences and first impressions.

Firstly, I have been amazed by the location and scenery of AMI. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I didn’t imagine the location to be quite as beautiful as it is. Coming from the city, I am always amazed by the transition of scenery driving towards the mountains: city to suburbs, suburbs to rolling hills, rolling hills to mountain roads with vistas of layered blue mountains. It’s no surprise that the locals here all seem to have such an intimate connection with the land and nature.

Secondly, I am grateful for the unique, immersive education that AMI provides. It creates an encouraging atmosphere where we can learn about sustainable agriculture, community development, and other important skills. Additionally, being part of a community provides many opportunities to learn, understand, and engage with people from all walks of life.

Lastly, I have been impressed by the people around me. We all come from different parts of the country, different backgrounds, and our own specific areas of interest. Despite those differences, everyone feels passionate about increasing access to healthy, sustainable, nutritious food, and in building a strong community in the process. Because of everyone’s various skills and abilities, we can learn from each other in a positive and motivating environment.

As the season progresses, I hope to remember my first impressions of AMI and continue to be inspired by the opportunities I have here and by the people I meet. I am optimistic and excited about the experiences that lay ahead, and I look forward to the many workshops and lessons that will prepare us to help build up communities and advocate for sustainable food systems and equal food access.
